Welcome to Historical Howden web site

The site tells the story of Howden down the ages and concentrates on the World War1 with the opening of the Royal Naval Airship Station that was built just North of  Howden for anti-submarine  patrols to defend the North Eastern ports from the German U-boats.

It also covers the more famous airships that were based there at times and the lost of the R.38/ZR2. Plus it tells the story of the building of the Barnes Wallis designed R.100 airship.

Howden is a small East Yorkshire Market Town mid-way between York and Hull Just off the M62 junction 37

The Howden Civic Society have won the final of the People's Millions Lottery. So now we can commence work on building a R100 airship Trail in the memory of Barnes Wallis. Many thanks to all of you who voted for us. 

After 2 years of form filling we have know managed to produced the R-100 airship history trail.

This consists of 24 plaques set into the pavement straight through the main Market Place in Howden and gives a visual view of how large the R-100 was.

The Trail was opened by Dr. Mary Stopes Roe, Barnes Wallis daughter on October 22 2014. There is more details and photos of the plaques on Face book and on the Howden Civic Society we site.
